PhD Candidate in Academic Literacy (using AI and Text Mining)

**Job Description**
The University of Amsterdam is hiring two PhD candidates for a project investigating language-related degree-awarding gaps in Dutch higher education. The project aims to enhance understanding of the role of language in academic achievement, particularly for students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The specific subproject focuses on how Dutch and English academic literacy develops within different educational tracks and how curriculum characteristics contribute to this. This involves analyzing a large sample of student-written texts from UvA databases, developing and validating automated (potentially LLM-based) scoring metrics, and conducting longitudinal and cross-sectional studies to assess academic language ability development and curriculum support.

**Qualifications**

• Artificial Intelligence
• Related field (Master’s or Research Master’s degree required)

**Experience**
Other:
• Master thesis demonstrating excellent research skills.
• Participation in the ACLC and the national research school training program.
