**Job Description**
This PhD position focuses on developing chemical-free advanced electrodialysis and membrane modification techniques for tailored desalination and brine management. The goal is to innovate beyond current membrane technologies by reducing environmental impact through the avoidance of chemical additions, minimizing harmful brine discharge, and potentially generating valuable products or selectively removing undesirable compounds. The research will explore advanced electrodialysis (ED) with monovalent-selective membranes to achieve chemical-free desalination and utilize in-situ and ex-situ membrane modification to enhance selectivity, robustness, and adaptability for customized desalination schemes. The overarching challenge is to create a desalination system that produces high-quality water and multiple concentrate streams with specific compositions, while significantly reducing chemical inputs and preventing sodium and chloride accumulation.
