Postdoc: Manifesting Mandates: Navigating Ambiguity in UN Special Political Missions

**Job Description**
This Postdoctoral research position is part of the “Manifesting Mandates: Navigating Ambiguity in UN Special Political Missions” project. The researcher will investigate the opportunities and challenges of UN Special Political Missions (SPMs) as a conflict management instrument and analyze how staff navigate mandate ambiguity at the mission level. The role involves conducting field research in Latin America, MENA, or Central Asia, leading to at least one international peer-reviewed publication, co-authoring articles with the Principal Investigator, and contributing 20% to teaching within the institute. The research aims to contribute to scholarship on global governance, multilateralism, organizational culture, and principal-agent relationships within UN peace operations.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Demonstrated experience of conducting field research and interviews.
• Demonstrated experience of using qualitative research methods.
• Willingness to develop expertise in further methodological work.
• Awareness of and/or expertise in the United Nations’ peace operations.
• Country expertise on a relevant country in Latin America, the MENA region, or Central Asia.
• Ability and availability to travel for field trips.
• Demonstrated experience of working both independently and as part of a team in an organized and results-oriented fashion.
• Excellent command of English (CEFR Level C1 or above).
• Additional language skills, preferably one or more of the official UN languages (specifically Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish) (Preferred).
• Expertise in, or familiarity with sociology, anthropology or psychology (Preferred).
• Demonstrated ability to publish in international peer-reviewed journals (Preferred).
• Ability to work independently.

**Qualifications**

• Ph.D. (completed by the time of appointment)

• Peace and Conflict Studies
PhD topic should be related to peace and conflict and/or conflict resolution.
