**Job Description**
This Ph.D. project focuses on understanding enzyme promiscuity and engineering enzymes to facilitate novel reactions, thereby improving the sustainability of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The research will involve bioinformatic selection of candidate enzymes, protein production and screening, engineering campaigns, and investigation of molecular mechanisms to accelerate the development of new-to-nature biocatalysts. The ultimate goal is to create practically applicable catalysts for the efficient synthesis of important societal molecules.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Strong grasp of and interest in fundamental concepts in organic chemistry
• Demonstrated ability and passion for learning new wet-lab or dry-lab skills
• Beneficial experience in: Synthetic chemistry
• Beneficial experience in: Site-directed mutagenesis and cloning; protein expression/purification
• Beneficial experience in: Enzyme engineering/evolution; analytical method development
• Beneficial experience in: Protein bioinformatics; computational (bio)chemistry

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Chemistry
• Biochemistry
• Biotechnology

Salary
Annual Salary: In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from the first year to the fourth year (Promovendus gross per month) based on a full-time contract (38 hours).
