**Job Description**
This Ph.D. position focuses on developing new mathematical techniques for Explainable AI (XAI) within the research project “Mathematical Foundations for Explainable AI.” The role involves creating the first mathematical framework for XAI and developing new explanation methods, utilizing tools from mathematical machine learning theory to prove performance guarantees and conducting programming experiments. The successful candidate will initially work on a pre-specified subproject and progressively shape their own research directions, culminating in a Ph.D. thesis.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Strong interest in mathematical machine learning theory and explainable AI.
• Very good programming skills in Python or similar.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Highly motivated and committed to research.
• Ability to work independently.
• Cooperative attitude and willingness to collaborate.
• Knowledge of mathematical machine learning theory or mathematical statistics (a plus).
• Prior knowledge of explainable AI (beneficial, but not required).

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Mathematics
• AI/Computer Science (with a strong mathematical component, including writing formal mathematical proofs)
• Other degrees with a strong mathematical component
Degree Level: Master’s degree (to be completed before the start of the position)
