The successful candidate will join the project ‘Royalist Radicals: Royalist Opposition and the Making of Parliamentary Democracy (France and Europe: 1814-1830)’, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and led by Dr Matthijs Lok. This project challenges deterministic narratives of democracy in 19th-century Europe by examining the ambivalent democratic legacy of royalist radicals in early 19th-century France and Europe. The Ph.D. candidate will study how royalist radicals appropriated and developed parliamentary democracy instruments despite ideological opposition, with a main focus on France and consideration of the European and imperial/global context.
