**Job Description**
The position is a doctoral research fellowship within the European Research Council-funded Consolidator project ECOART, which aims to develop an ecological history of Eurasian art from 1500 to 1800. The specific PhD project will investigate the artistic use and visual representation of geological resources such as gemstones, clays, and metals in Mughal India. This includes a comprehensive investigation of the extraction, exchange, and artistic applications of these resources, through research on extant artifacts implementing mined goods and visual documentations of mining itself. The dissertation will analyze how selected geological resources informed aesthetic practices in the Mughal Empire and beyond, and how knowledge on these materials was developed and articulated in art and artisanship. Funding for fieldwork, archival research, conference attendance, and publications will be available.
