Early Career Researcher

**Job Description**
Merton College proposes to appoint one three-year, fixed-term Early Career Researcher from 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter in the fields of Mathematics or Computer Science. These posts are designed to provide opportunities for successful applicants to establish a research profile and prepare postholders for academic careers. The Early Career Researcher is expected to undertake a high-quality programme of original research, publicise outcomes, and engage in the academic life of the College, potentially including a limited amount of teaching.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Research expertise in the chosen field commensurate with career stage, demonstrated by a recently completed (or close to being completed) doctoral thesis, published or forthcoming books or articles in refereed journals, conference proceedings, software packages or patents (as relevant)
• A coherent plan for research expected to make a valuable contribution to the candidate’s field for the duration of the appointment
• Evidence of active participation in the successful dissemination of research findings

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Mathematics
• Computer Science

**Experience**
Other:
• Recently completed doctorate or close to completion, with thesis submitted no later than 3 months before the start date of this post
• Not eligible if doctoral thesis formally submitted for viva voce examination before 1 October 2024, unless a career break or other exceptional circumstances apply
