Ph.D position in Chemistry with a specialization in biochemistry

September 11, 2025

**Job Description**
This Ph.D. position focuses on electron microscopy (EM) method development within chemistry, specializing in biochemistry. The thesis project will involve focused ion beam (FIB), cryo-EM, and electron tomography to visualize bacterial architecture, molecular machines, and the unique spatial organization of biomolecules. Research will specifically investigate the filamentous bacterium family of Streptomyces, in vitro assembly of cytoskeleton proteins, and the cellular localization of polarisome and divisome protein complexes. The project aims to combine advanced EM techniques, including sample preparation, 3D reconstruction (single particle and helical), and in situ electron tomography, to image bacterial multiprotein complexes and understand mechanisms regulating bacterial polarity and cell division.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Strong interest and enthusiasm for biological science, microbiology, and biotechnology.
• Fluency in both oral and written English.
• Skills and experiences of diverse microscopy techniques, especially electron microscopy (Merit).
• Computational programming and modeling (Merit).
• Collaborative skills, drive, and independence (Consideration).

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Second-cycle level degree or equivalent (e.g., 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level).
• First-cycle courses of at least 90 ECTS credits within Chemistry or another directly relevant subject, with at least 15 ECTS credits acquired at second-cycle level within the specialization or an equivalent subject.
• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology engineering, or related scientific fields.
