Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is a leading comprehensive university in Germany, fostering multidisciplinary learning and interdisciplinary research. The Research Training Group (RTG) 3064, “Technologies of Witnessing: Media and Cultural Practices,” examines how witnessing practices evolve culturally and historically in contemporary media cultures. The program is structured across three working areas focusing on knowledge formations, processes/arrangements, and human-machine relations, involving disciplines such as art history, cultural studies, film studies, media culture studies, social and cultural anthropology, and theater studies. Doctoral researchers benefit from a structured qualification program, interdisciplinary study, dedicated mentoring, career development, and opportunities for international academic engagement.
