PhD Candidate Human-Centered Interpretable Machine Learning (1.0fte)

**Job Description**
This PhD position at Leiden University’s Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science focuses on developing human-centered interpretable machine learning. The project aims to create theory and algorithms for hybrid model selection, leveraging domain knowledge through interactive learning and building upon the minimum description length (MDL) principle. The research will evaluate methods on real-world healthcare case studies to discover novel insights, addressing the limitations of black-box models and incorporating expert knowledge for improved usability and accuracy. The candidate will be embedded in the Explanatory Data Analysis group.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Strong knowledge of and experienced with machine learning, data mining, and statistics
• Knowledge of and experience with information theoretic learning (e.g., the MDL principle) is a plus
• Highly motivated to perform foundational data mining research and apply methods to real-world applications
• Creative, ‘making things work’ mentality, independent, and communicative team player
• Experienced with writing scientific manuscripts and excellent academic writing skills
• Excellent programming skills (preferably in Python)
• Interested in contributing to educational activities
• Excellent proficiency in English (oral and written)

• Computer Science

• Related field

**Experience**

Annual Salary: €36,708 - €46,572 (gross) Position Classification: Pay scale P (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) Benefits: Additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development, sabbatical leave, individual choices model for terms and conditions, potential substantial tax break for non-Dutch candidates.
