**Job Description**
This PhD position offers the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research within the project “Artificial Secrecy? Taking Transparency in EU Digital and Data Regulation Seriously.” The research focuses on the balance between transparency and confidentiality rules concerning regulated digital technologies and data in the EU, analyzing EU legal frameworks such as GDPR, DSA, DMA, DGA, DA, and AIA. The aim is to explore legal arguments supporting algorithmic transparency and data access for public interest research, investigating how EU law achieves transparency, protects confidential information, and aligns with European fundamental rights, including the role of freedom of information requests. The project involves legal-doctrinal, normative, and small-scale empirical research, including two workshops for academic exchange and practical insights from civil society and journalists.

• Demonstrable interest in challenges arising in the digital and algorithmic society for transparency and accountability.
• A clear interest in conducting research in the field of transparency of regulated digital technologies and data in the EU and the role of civil society actors, including journalists.
• Collegial attitude and capacity to work not only independently but also in teams.
• An excellent written and spoken command of English.
• Ability and willingness to organize workshops, lecture series, and similar events.

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Information Law
• European Union Law

**Experience**
Other:
• Demonstrable knowledge of freedom of information laws, transparency or confidentiality rules (a plus).
• Written and spoken command of other languages, including Dutch (a plus).
• Demonstrable experience with organizing workshops, lecture series, and similar events (a plus).

Annual Salary: €36,708 - €46,572 gross per year Union Affiliation: Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) Benefits: 8% holiday and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
