PhD position in Chemistry with a specialization in biochemistry

September 13, 2025

**Job Description**
This Ph.D. project focuses on advanced electron microscopy (EM) method development within chemistry, specializing in biochemistry. The research will utilize focused ion beam (FIB), cryo-EM, and electron tomography to visualize the architecture and molecular machinery driving bacterial growth and development, specifically in the filamentous bacterium family of Streptomyces. Key areas include the in vitro assembly of cytoskeleton proteins and the cellular localization of polarisome and divisome protein complexes. The student will combine cryo-EM sample preparation, single-particle and helical 3D reconstruction, and in situ electron tomography to image bacterial multi-protein complexes and understand mechanisms regulating bacterial polarity and cell division. The position involves participation in research and postgraduate courses, with potential for teaching and other departmental work up to 20%.
