**Job Description**
The PhD candidate will conduct research at the intersection of optimization using heuristic algorithms and (Explainable) Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The focus is on leveraging machine learning or XAI to enhance heuristic algorithms, or conversely, improving heuristics by incorporating machine learning techniques. Candidates with a broader interest in Operations Research and/or Data Science are also encouraged to apply.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Proficient programming skills (ideally Python, Julia, Java or C++)
• Fluency in English (both oral and written)

Annual Salary: €42,786.16 - €54,242.08 gross (including 8.0% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus) Position Classification: Scale P (UFO profile PhD) Benefits: Flexible working hours, possibility to work partly from home, monthly commuting and internet allowance, 29 vacation days plus 4 public holidays (with option for 12 additional compensation days), collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model, good pension scheme (ABP), company fitness and extensive sports facilities, personal and professional development through training programs and 'acknowledge and appreciate' initiatives.
