**Job Description**
This PhD research project aims to significantly improve sludge dewatering in wastewater treatment by actively controlling the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), thereby reducing flocculant use and environmental footprint. The research will build on existing knowledge to explore biological, chemical, or thermal treatments to induce changes in EPS properties, utilizing advanced analytical tools for thorough characterization. The ultimate goal is to establish a proof of principle for a novel approach that enhances sludge dewatering efficiency and sustainability, contributing to more efficient wastewater management and potential resource recovery.
**Skills & Abilities**
• Highly motivated and curiosity driven.
• Previous experience with biopolymers research and characterization of biopolymers (ideally).
• Ability to collaborate with representatives from water authorities and technology providers.
**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• (Environmental) Biotechnology
• Chemical Engineering
• Process Engineering
• Related field
**Experience**
Other:
• Ideally previous experience with biopolymers research and characterization of biopolymers.
