Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in healthcare AI

**Job Description**
The University of Oxford is seeking a talented Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in healthcare AI to join the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) Unit. This role involves leading innovative research at the intersection of AI and clinical medicine within an interdisciplinary team. The researcher will apply advanced AI methods, including classical machine learning, large language models, and agent-based AI, to extensive healthcare datasets to improve infection diagnosis and treatment, detect outbreaks, and optimize hospital care pathways. The position is embedded in major National Institute for Health Research-funded initiatives and requires evaluation of AI tools in real-world settings, supervision of PhD students, and contribution to the strategic direction of AI within the Unit.

**Skills & Abilities**
• Expertise in AI and machine learning (classical approaches to large language models)
• Proficiency in Python and key ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, LLM APIs)
• Track record of applying AI methods to deliver reproducible, high-quality analyses
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Strong engagement with colleagues from different disciplines
• Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Strong experience applying AI methods to complex data, ideally healthcare data
• Record of high-quality publications and presentations to varied audiences
• Ability to supervise PhD students and support colleagues
• Flexible and proactive attitude, with initiative to develop new approaches and strategies
• Keen interest in biomedical science and medicine
• Experience in applying AI to large-scale healthcare datasets (highly valuable)
• Experience contributing to grant proposals (highly valuable)
• Experience deploying AI tools in real-world applications (highly valuable)

**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field (e.g., AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering)
