The Research Assistant I assists with low-complexity research tasks supporting a project focused on advanced surface engineering and laser-based manufacturing methods, particularly laser peening and laser machining. The project aims to understand the effects of heat treatment on shape memory alloys after laser machining, utilizing advanced characterization techniques.
**Skills & Abilities**
• Experience in proposal writing
• Familiarity with the physics of laser-material interactions
• Strong research expertise
• Relevant industrial experience in applying laser-based processes to various materials, especially shape memory alloys
• Ability to conduct scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)
• Sample preparation using a focused ion beam (FIB) for transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
• Established record of peer-reviewed publications in the materials science field (Preferred)
**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• High school diploma or GED
Preferred Degree(s) in:
• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
