**Job Description**
The Social Science Researcher II at the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) at The University of Alabama oversees social science research projects, managing day-to-day activities and contributing significantly to project planning and design. This role supports high-quality, interdisciplinary social science research addressing critical societal challenges by combining independent scholarship with a focus on research strategy, team science, and external funding development. The researcher applies methodological and technical expertise to support faculty and interdisciplinary teams in developing competitive proposals, advancing collaborative projects, and strengthening ISSR’s role as a hub for innovative, impactful social science. Responsibilities also include assisting with short- and long-term planning, project goals, research proposals, and dissemination of findings.
**Skills & Abilities**
• Strong knowledge of social science research design, methodology, and analysis.
• Ability to conceptualize and lead interdisciplinary research initiatives.
• Familiarity with federal, foundation, and other external research funding mechanisms.
• Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including the ability to translate technical findings for non-technical audiences.
• Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
• Capacity to think innovatively and strategically in developing research ideas and proposals.
• Proven ability to convene, lead, and sustain interdisciplinary research teams (Preferred).
**Qualifications**
Required Degree(s) in:
• Social Science or closely related field (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree)
**Experience**
Experience Required:
• 4 years (BSc) in social science or closely related research experience
• 2 years (MSc) in social science or closely related research experience
• Some social science or closely related research experience (Doctoral degree)
Other:
• Post-Baccalaureate degree (Master’s degree or higher) is highly preferred.
• Demonstrated success securing external research funding as PI, Co-PI, or senior personnel (Preferred).
• Experience developing or leading large-scale, collaborative grant proposals (Preferred).
• Strong record of peer-reviewed publications or equivalent scholarly output (Preferred).
